We participate in the Verified Beef Production On Farm Food Safety Program. Further to this we record every vaccination and/or treatment, the serial numbers on all bottles of product, expiry dates, and who gave the needle. We use only stainless steel, detectable needles in our operation. Every animal has their medical record checked prior to leaving the yard to ensure that they have cleared any drug withdrawals. We work closely with our veterinarian to monitor our herd health.
We prefer to operate a vaccination program to prevent disease, rather than relying on antibiotics to treat problems after the fact. All product labels are checked and closely followed.
Calves are vaccinated on the Boehringer-Ingleheim Prime Protection Program. This is a two shot program that includes a modified live vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR, PI3 and a killed 8 way vaccine. Calves are vaccinated at approximately 1 month of age and then given a booster shot 2 weeks prior to weaning.
Cows are all vaccinated on the Boerhinger-Ingleheim Express Verified program and are vaccinated approximately 2 weeks prior to breeding. This protects them from reproductive disease and provides a guarantee that the calves are BVD-PI free. Cows are routinely boostered with an 8-way vaccine at the same time.
